The manufacture of paints systems is complex process involving the use of many potentially dangerous and toxic chemicals. Paint systems that have been endorsed under the Environmental Choice Labelling scheme undergo rigorous third party analysis of their production systems.

Paint is a major source of VOC’s and other gases in internal environments. The selection of low VOC or water based paints can improve internal air quality and reduce risks to applicators.

It is generally argued that mineral silicate and natural paints which are manufactured from vegetable oils using simple low tech processes are the environmentally preferable choice. However care needs to be taken as some vegetable paints are less durable and require greater maintenance.

Factory application of paint systems can significantly reduce the amount of wastage of paint and the emissions can be better controlled. This is particularly relevant in the case of spray-applied systems. Factory applied paint systems such as polyester powder coating and factory sprayed finishes are better controlled and as such are generally preferable.

The cleaning of paint brushes and disposal of paint residues and tins can be a major cause of environmental pollution. Paint residues should never be flushed down stormwater drains. Some councils accept old paint tins to be recycled. A number of paint manufacturers also operate take back and recycling schemes. It is worth enquiring to ensure such as service is available.

When considering wall paper, consider the type of adhesive used. Starch based adhesives are available and are of limited environmental damage.

Wallpaper is also available manufactured from recycled materials rather than virgin materials.
